Three Essential Tips To Consider When Feeding Your Pet Turtle.

Wednesday 7 July 2010 @ 5:34 am

When it comes to feeding turtles meals it is often one of the only times when you as its owner comes into contact with your pet and your turtle understands completely what the procedure is.Your turtle acknowledges that you are a friend with food and willingly comes over to take bites out of the meal you provide it. This should be a quick and easy task there are a few mistakes that new turtle owners or even some experienced turtle owners make which can make feeding your turtle a lot more work than it needs to be. Here are a few tips to make turtle feeding easier for you and your turtle:

1)Be sure to feed your aquatic turtle in a different tank from their aquarium

If you are caring for turtles in the who are in the aquatic species, it?s always best to feed them in a separate tank or bowl instead
of their aquarium.Aquatic turtles in particular are very messy eaters and tend to leave quite a bit of mess behind when it
comes to dinner time. Feeding your turtle in a separate tank eliminates the chances of bits of their food being left as crumbs in their aquarium which over time causes the water to lose freshness and also dirties the tank as a whole.

2)Supplementing the food with essential vitamins

Before you serve your turtle their food, this is a good opportunity to sprinkle or dust their meal with vitamins and minerals that are much needed in their diet. Two vital vitamins you can use as dressing or dusting for their foods is:

*Calcium
*Vitamin A

Calcium can come in the form of a powder and you can obtain calcium powder from most pet stores or even online from a respectable source. The best way to use this powder is to sprinkle some over your pet turtles foods and then sit back and watch them chow down. Keep in mind that you?ll want to buy phosphorus free calcium to prevent unbalancing your turtle?s calcium to phosphorus ratio.

Cod liver oil is a great source of vitamin A and it?s just a simple case of drizzling some cod liver oil over their salad
mixture before giving it to them.

3)Feed your tortoise in small amounts

One problem turtle owners have when Feeding turtles is the fact that their pet tortoise eats food in small amounts and often leaves
their vegetables and fruits unattended for long periods of time, occasionally coming back to nibble on it later. The problem with this is if there is a large amount of food left over then it is likely to spoil. A way to solve this problem is to feed your tortoise small amounts of food throughout the day instead of one big meal. When it is time for a meal ensure your pet turtle finishes their meal completely before providing extras. If this is inconvenient for you try making a note of the amount of food your tortoise/turtle consumes in a day and give them that exact amount so as to prevent leftovers and food going bad. Whatever foods are leftover at the end of the day must be removed you don?t want any pest or parasites infecting it and your tortoise devouring that down.

Choosing The Proper Fresh Water Aquarium Fish

Tuesday 29 June 2010 @ 4:08 pm

If you plan on starting an aquarium for the first time, your best bet is to go with fresh water aquarium fish. The only challenge you’ll face with fresh water fish is keeping them healthy which takes a bit of knowledge. you don’t have to be a biologist to run a fresh water setup.

Getting Started

To get started, do some research on the type of fish you would like first then build your aquarium around those fish. Once that is complete all you need is a tank, a filter, lights, heater, thermometer and conditioning chemicals. One of the easiest starter kits for the beginner is the biorb fish tank . After you put everything together, allow the nitrogen process to cycle for a few weeks. Once that is complete your tank will be ready for fresh water fish!

What type of fish should I get?

There are many different types of fresh water fish species to choose from at your local pet store. Most people start with a small aquarium for decorative purposes and include fish that are easy to care for like tetras, guppies and goldfish. Those who are really into the hobby can start out with bigger aquariums and have a wider assortment of fish including the larger species. Larger species of fish do require a bit more care and have different needs than smaller species. For instance, if you were to keep Oscars, they prefer a large variety of food including live prey items. Another favorite among fresh water aquarist are the African Malwi Cichlids. These types of fish have adapted to a certain type of water hardness and PH. Other fish such as the Discus are expensive and very difficult to keep. The Discuss must live within a very narrow PH level of 6.0 to 6.5 throughout its life in the aquarium otherwise the fish often die.

It’s all about knowing your fresh water aquarium fish . Before you buy fish make sure you know about the species of fish you like. Knowing their characteristics will make it easier in caring for them and ultimately save you money.

There really is no secret to running an aquarium full of healthy fish, simply know more about the fish you want to keep and plan accordingly.

How To Adopt A Golden Retriever

Tuesday 29 June 2010 @ 3:33 pm

How to Adopt a Golden Retriever
By: Mega Man (www.about-dogs-and-cats.com)

It is difficult for anyone to not fall in love with the golden retriever breed. They are stable, loving, eager to please and gentle. They not only make fantastical companions and family pets they also make ideal service dogs. But, is this the breed that is right for you? Regardless of the breed of dog we are attracted to, it is important when picking a dog breed to adopt that you get one that will fit your lifestyle.

Guldens are devoted, loyal, mild mannered and thrive on giving and receiving attention. But, they are also quite energetic with an endearing playful streak. They love human companionship, and therefore are not suited to those that cannot commit much time to their pet.

Daily exercise is an important part of their care. These dogs must be provided with adequate room and time to play. They love to retrieve balls, throwing sticks or Frisbees. Along with giving them these types of opportunities to play, socializing with other dogs is important as are nice walks. Other activities your golden retriever would enjoy include swimming, hiking, jogging or biking. Some owners forget that challenging certain breeds with mental exercise is also an important aspect to their care. You can create fun games or interesting things for your dog to do that will keep them entertained and prevent them from becoming bored. Since guldens are so eager to please, they really enjoy having jobs to keep them busy and offer them the opportunity to gain approval from their owners.

Guldens get along well with children, strangers, and other pets but their love for just about everyone makes golden retrievers poor watchdogs. Plus, since these dogs are such fast learners and highly intelligent, they are easy to train which makes this breed perfect for inexperienced owners. They require positive obedience training with lots of praise and treats but be careful, these dogs love to eat. Many golden retrievers suffer from obesity because of their love for food, so you have to be careful and watch how much you feed him. While a youthful golden retriever is not as prone to weight issues, it can be a concern for older dogs as they become less active.

It appears like these dogs are almost the perfect family pet and companion. But, unfortunately, they do have a tendency to chew. Providing them with appropriate toys so that your own belongings and furnishings don?t suffer can help the situation in most cases. New owners to the breed should also be aware of their grooming requirements. They require a moderate amount of grooming which includes brushing their coats about twice a week. They might need it more often when they are shedding more heavily. They also require straggly hairs to be trimmed as well as the hair around their bottoms for hygiene reasons. Dogs with floppy ears like the golden should also have their ears cleaned regularly to reduce the risk of infection. Since the golden retriever is such a heavy shedder, it is not a suitable breed for those with allergies.

Puppy Training And Few Tips

Tuesday 22 June 2010 @ 5:33 am

Pets are superb, especially when they are well mannered and very obeying. Yes, the pets are also a man?s best friend. But choosing pets among the many, which one would the best? Well mannered, obeying and loyal? Yes, indeed a dog or a puppy. However, a puppy does not inherit these features by birth. They?re trained. And there training is known as puppy training. One should know that once he has a bought a puppy, he should train him the soonest he can. As if you delay, the puppy may get older with lack of manners and weaker senses, and then it?d be quite tougher to make some changes in your puppy.

If your puppy is well mannered and very obeying, it is indeed your success but what if it is the other way round? Again, it is indeed your fault. The puppy seeks some attention and requires to be trained, for its training makes the owner proud when people praise the puppy. There are numerous ways to train your puppy and there is much training you can give to your puppy. But first one is to give puppy the basic training to sit, stay and run upon your orders. And, then comes the intermediary training which would enhance the puppy?s basic abilities and teach him to fetch and return something. Finally comes the expert training, this would enable you to use the hand signals to communicate with your puppy.

These trainings do not only help the puppy to get more organized but does also enable you to make communications with your puppy. After these trainings, you?ll notice your puppy no longer gets distracted from something while you?re next to him and pays good attention to you. However, there are few more things you?d know about the puppy?s training. You should always keep positive reinforcements to your puppy. And even if it does something wrong, you should never hit the puppy instead a positive punishment such as not giving your puppy some attention would do the favor of realizing the puppy its mistake.

Once you?re through the basic and intermediary trainings, you should start giving the puppy some additional training. Of course, the first one is to the house-training, that would restrain the puppy from doing anything that would contaminate the house. Then you can give your puppy some playing trainings like the Frisbee training and the swimming training to enhance the metabolism of your puppy. The puppy training isn?t something tiring but its all fun. One can make it a work-out to play with the puppy which would help both of them to enjoy and keep themselves smart and fit.

Praising the puppy is the best part of the puppy training. Puppies are actually very emotional. You can make them do something by giving them good attention or restrain them from something by avoiding giving an attention. And yes, one must be consistent in the procedural training, there?s no way that the first day your puppy could give you all that you want from him. It?d take time and it?d be fun. Happy puppy training!

Find Out 3 Reasons To Consider Getting The Rotastak Fairground Fun Hamster Cage For Your Child?s Pet Hamster

Monday 21 June 2010 @ 11:02 am

Recently, a friend of mine showed me an amazing photograph of a new hamsters habitat that she bought for her child?s new pet hamster. When I saw it, it immediately grabbed/caught my attention!

My first reaction was? ?Oh my! This cage is really bright and big!?

Her answer to my reaction ?Yes, yes, I know?? gave me a feeling that I was not the first person with such a strong reaction to the snapshot of her kid?s hamster cage.

Okay, so why did I react so strongly? Isn?t it just another hamster cage? Please allow me to do my best and describe the cage, in the hope that you will understand that this is Not ?Just Another Hamster Cage?.

So, the first thing that grabbed my eye (you can?t miss it) is its color. While it has a colorful combination of yellow, orange, blue and red tubes, the overall color that stands out to me is orange. How?s that for a vibrantly colored hamster cage?

Next, it has these large dark-bright-orange swirly tunnels on the sides that make it look like somebody?s fantasy slide playground come to life. It also has this cool dome-shaped attic top that?s dark transparent yellow in color with a red colored base. (She amusingly informed me that this is the eating room.)

The rest of the cage is transparent plastic, but her kid chose to stick some stickers on it. All in all, this is a luxurious 3 level hamster cage!!! (Goodness! I wish I had a 3 level home that someone else would clean for me every week.) At first, I couldn?t really make out what the stickers were, but she told me they were stickers that had a fairground theme. Interestingly enough, the stickers came bundled with the cage, as a package.

Best of all, I couldn?t help but laugh out loud when she told me the name of the hamsters cage. When she said the words ?Fairground Fun?, I instantly made the connection and gave a silent salute to whoever designed the cage. It really did look like a playground. And I figure I wouldn?t mind having such a beautiful home to live in. Now, if only I were a hamster?

So, after seeing what a great-looking fun cage this is, I decided to come up with 3 Reasons You Should Buy A Rotastak Fairground Fun Hamster CageFor Your Kid?s New Pet Hamster

1. Kids will take pleasure in watching their hamster run around in and loving their cage. It?s amazing how long your kid can stare at his/her pet hamster climb up and down the tubes. Having a three level hamster cage means your kids will never get tired watching their hamster explore the various areas of the cage.

2. The hamster gets enough space to scamper around and exercise in. Apparently, the cage even comes with a hamster exercise wheel. I have to highlight that this really is a huge hamsters cage. My friend tells me there?s hardly any room left for anything else ever since she put it on her living room table.

3. Your kid will have fun putting the cage up. Since the cage comes with all these tunnels, tubes and three main units that join together, purchasing this hamster cage is like buying them a puzzle that you and your kids can piece and solve together. There?s a sense of satisfaction when they see that they?re able to set up such a grand looking hamster cage.

I can think of a few other reasons why getting this extraordinary extraordinary hamster cage for a kid?s pet hamster is a good idea. But I think I better stop here for now. This post is getting kind of long. I might have gotten carried away rambling about my friend?s new hamster cage.

So, click here if you want to find out more details about the Rotastak Fairground Fun Hamster Cage. Just imagine how big and wide your kid?s smile will be when they receive this as a gift. I know it put a great big smile on my face when I saw it!

How To Have Small Dog Training

Wednesday 16 June 2010 @ 3:48 am

Small dogs are everywhere. In fact the breed of small dogs is so wide and numerous that it can easily compete with the quantity of typical dogs. Small dogs vary in sizes from one geographical region to another and from one environment to another. For example, a typical toy poodle found in United States of America might differ in size with a toy poodle found in South Africa. Furthermore, diet, environment, climate, living behavior and a number of other aspects suggest the size of small dogs. Small dogs are also commonly known as toy dogs. Owning a small dog has a number of advantages as well as disadvantages. Sometimes, small dogs are much better than typical large sized dogs. But sometime, they can be a true troublesome for your home.

Small dogs can easily get settled up in your apartment or room ? no matter how small or large it is. This will not require you to have any additional setup for your dog in your room. Small dogs are also very active and friendly with home people in comparison with other typical large sized dogs, who tend to be lazier. Small dogs are very active and can be proved truly helpful for your small baby. Many people think that typical large sized dogs are intelligent and much more reliable. This is not always true. Even small dogs are also very intelligent and can perform activities with greater intelligence.

Training a small dog is also quiet easier in comparison with teaching and training a large size typical dog. Furthermore, small dogs are easy to live with. In contrast, typical large sized dogs such as bull dog or German shepherd can be proved a little lazy and hence will learn in a greater time span. You can easily carry your small dog with you, no matter you are going to a night party or to casino. Carrying and putting small dogs in your car is also not a trouble. You can easily lift up your small dog in one hand. This will keep you other hand free.

Being small, active, cute and naught, small dogs are sometimes not preferred by house ladies. This is probably because small dogs do not take much time in messing up a house, bedroom, kitchen and dining hall. The disadvantage is that you cannot readily grab the dog as he/she is small and fast. In such circumstances, you should train your dog the correct way. There?s no doubt that some of the small dogs are stubborn and they can be proved really problematic in learning new things. You should be firm and patient in the training of your small dog.

Many people don?t treat large and small dogs equally. They think that small dogs are not that capable and hence can bear much more than a typical bull dog or German shepherd. This is a totally wrong perception. Small dogs also respond to your activities, show their angriness and happiness. You should also be able to respond to his/her activities so that the small dog can get more familiar and friendly with you.

Keeping Your Ferrets Absolutely Free From Harm In The Home

Monday 14 June 2010 @ 9:21 am

Most ferret owners are perfectly aware of the potential problems that face their ferret if it were to get outside. But many do not realize that there are also potential problems inside the home that can be very serious. It is a very good idea to ensure that you have made your home safe for your pet to avoid a potentially serious scenario from occurring.

Do not worry too much about these problems though. We will look at some ways you can make your home great for any pet ferret.

Ferrets and Home Burrowing

Ferrets will sneak into the smallest potential holes, at any given moment. It?s an instinctive factor for them. In the event that they discover a gap in between furniture, floors or partitions, they?ll be in there like a shot. This can lead to plenty of issues for the ferret.

Firstly, they might get exposed to electrical cables, in wall or ground cavities. The danger to a ferret is elevated by the fact that they like to chew things, not understanding that chewing on a cable could send them a shock of over 200 volts.

What Is The Best Way To Clean A Cat’s Wound?

Friday 11 June 2010 @ 4:48 pm

It appears my cat has been in a fight. When I checked my cat over, he seemed ok although there was a little scab mark. A few weeks after the fight I noticed that a lump was appearing on his side. I then noticed that he started limping and was not as active as he usually is.

I took a closer look at my cat and could see the swelling was getting larger, but it also smelt really foul and stale. I could not see a cut or a scab so was unsure what was going on and realised I would have to take him to the vets. I kept a close eye on him and on a later inspection I noticed that there was some dried blood around but I could not see any opening or fresh cut and so did not know where this came from. I thought it was a good idea to try and clean the area, using some cotton wool and water, to see if this would show what was wrong with my cat.

Your pets become as precious to you as your kids and you want to ensure that they are kept happy and healthy and especially able to play with their favourite toys and ideas freely.

As soon as I got up the next morning, I went to look for the cat and found him asleep in his usual spot on the spare bed. I could not see the lump sticking out, but could see a wet slick patch of fur. Now the lump had disappeared, I could see that there was some puss seeping out of the holes from his side and the horrible foul smell had not disappeared.

I didn’t know what to do now. It was early in the morning and the vets were not open yet. The first thing was I knew I had to clean this area. My cat was trying hard to clean it himself, but I needed to make sure that it was totally clean and that he was not going to transfer more dirt or infection into this wounded area. But I didn’t know how I was going to clean it. Yes, I could get cotton wool and use some warm salted water to clean the area but was this the best and right course of action to take.

As I was dealing with a more severe wound and there was puss seeping out, I thought that I needed to try and clean the wound more deeply and thoroughly to remove the puss. I then decided that I wanted to flush the wound out and would need to use the bath. This meant that I would need some assistance and get someone to hold and keep the cat in the bath. I went to look for an item I could use to squirt or pour water over this area. The idea of using clean warm water to wash the wounded area, hopefully would remove the puss, dirt and infection away from the wounded area. As you can imagine my cat really didn’t like this and it was certainly necessary that somebody was holding him in the bath. However, this way of flushing out and cleaning the wound was a lot quicker, less likely to spread any infection or damage and hurt the sensitive tissue area which was visable. With the wounded area now cleaner, I need to ensure that it stays clean and does not become infected again.

My cat was actually in less discomfort and pain now that the abscess and infection had dispersed, the swelling removed and the wounded area was clean. I noticed now that the wounded area was cleaner, that my cat was not trying to clean it so much himself. However as it was a while since we could get an appointment with the vets, I regularly kept cleaning this wounded area myself, using this flushing method to ensure that it remained cleaned. This lump had been an abscess, from a very small puncture wound when he had been fighting but had left no mark.

Looking after a poorly pet can be easier if your children and happily amused and occupied with arts & crafts activities.

This is the risk of puncture wounds when cats fight and it is hard to treat at the time as you cannot see a wound to clean.

How To Care For A Pet Turtle – 5 Critical Tips For A Vibrant, Joyful Turtle!

Friday 11 June 2010 @ 9:51 am

Turtles are truly wonderful pets. Learning how to care for a pet turtle the right way is certainly worth the time, effort, and money you may spend. Remember, there is no excuse for the premature death of your turtle based on neglect or lack of knowledge. The five tips I’m about to share with you can help you provide a long, healthy, and happy life for your little friend.

Caring For Turtle – Tip One:

Educate yourself. Learn about the specific breed of your turtle. Is it a Box Turtle, a Slider, a tortoise, or something else? Know its special dietary needs, temperature requirements, and social temperment. The more you know about your turtle, the better off you will be.

Caring For Turtles – Tip Two:

Make the necessary household adjustments. This need not be a major, laborious process. But it will require a one-time “set up” so that you and your turtle can get the most out of your lives together. A few things you should do include calling local vets to find one experienced in treating turtles, acquiring and setting up you turtle’s tank, and learning the best diet for your particular breed of turtle.

Care for Pet Turtle – Tip Three:

As far as your turtle’s drinking and swimming water is concerned, avoid using chlorine at all costs. Tap water is definitely chlorinated, so you will not want to use it unless you have let is set in a big container for 24 hours, minimum. This will allow the chlorine to evaporate, and then the water will be usable. Of course, if you’ve got a couple dollars to spend, you should definitely invest in a few gallons of spring water.

Pet Turtle Care – Tip Four:

It is imperative that you provide your turtle with a mercury vapor UVB heat lamp for basking. This type of lamp will provide your turtle with sufficient amounts of vitamin D3, which prevents bone disease and premature death. Without this lamp, your turtle is in serious trouble, so please do not overlook its importance! Leave the light on for about half of each day.

Caring For Turtles – Tip Five:

You MUST maintain the proper temperature in your turtle’s tank. Of course, this varies from species to species, but generally speaking, 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 70 degrees at night are generally accepted as rule of thumb. You will want to purchase an under water heater to achieve this. Again, knowing the unique requirements for your specific turtle’s breed is absolutely necessary.

Turtles can (and should) live an extremely long time, occasionally even outliving their owner(s)! There is really no excuse for letting your animal die prematurely. Take the time to learn about your turtle. Buy a book or two. This can truly make a huge difference in the length of time that you and your turtle can enjoy together! You will find that it is well worth your small investment of time and money to do things the right way from the beginning.

A turtle is a wonderful pet. They have more personality than many people realize. You’ve made a fantastic decision to educate yourself on being a good turtle owner! And there is still much to be learned…

The truth of the matter is that far too many of these wonderful animals die prematurely at the hands of ignorant people. Do us all a favor and don’t be one of them. Learn how to take care of your turtle, please.
