Have you ever thought of using vinegar and baking soda to cure your case of boredom? There is not much worse than sitting around the house with nothing to do. There are many cool tricks and experiments that can be done with just vinegar and baking soda. So, grab those ingredients and cure our case of boredom!
Lets start by understanding why vinegar and baking soda make such a great combination. Vinegar is composed of about 5% acetic acid (CH3COOH). Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate NaHCO3) is a base. When the two are mixed, a neutralization reaction occurs between the two which releases carbon dioxide gas (CO2).
Now, lets see what we can do to entertain ourselves. First, we can blow up a balloon without blowing into it. Take a pop bottle and put a little vinegar in the bottom. Attach a balloon that is halfed fill with baking soda to the top of the bottle. Now, lift the balloon so the contents enter the bottle and watch the balloon fill with CO2! This works best if you stretch the balloon a little before using it.
Everyone likes an explosion, so lets make it happen. Take a piece of paper towel, and place some baking soda on it. Fold the paper towel so that the sodium bicarbonate is completely concealed. Take a plastic zip bag, and put about 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup of warm water in it. Zip the bag half way and drop the papertowel into the bag. QUICKLY zip the bag the rest of the way and stand back. Be sure to do this quickly to get the best result.
The most common scientific use of baking soda and vinegar is the classic volcano science experiment. The structure of the volcano can be made in many ways. I will just explain the essential part, the molten lava! The inside of the volcano should be made with an open container (2 liter bottle works great). The volcano is built around the bottle. Place a tbsp. of dish soap and a tbsp of baking soda into the bottle. If you wish, you can add a drop of red food coloring for effect. When you are ready for the eruption, add a quarter cup of vinegar to the bottle.
Those are just a few ideas, if you use your imagination you can find an unlimited number of fun things to do. Anytime you are sitting around with nothing to do, get creative and explore science.
There are so many different science experiments that can be done using your basic household items. Want more fun science experiments with household items?
