The importance of physical fitness has been given emphasis since the time of the ancient Greeks. Its significance to our daily lives has been scientifically proven and one can come up with an ostensibly long list of benefits that it provides. An improved quality of life, extra energy, and reduced risks of having serious illnesses and diseases are just a few of the benefits that we can get from being physical fit; and there is a lot more in store.
One obvious benefit we can get from staying physically fit is having improved physical appearance. Regular physical exercise helps us have more lean muscles and less body fat, making us look better. Having improved physical appearance in turn enhances our social life.
Physical fitness helps us maintain a healthy heart. Regularly engaging in cardio-vascular activities helps improve the ability of our body to effectively deliver oxygen to our muscles. It also helps improve our cardio-pulmonary functions, decreases our blood pressure, and lowers our resting heart rate. When paired with resistance training, regular cardio-vascular exercise also helps improve our metabolism and enables us to burn calories more effectively. As we age, our metabolism usually tends to slow down. Staying active and following a well-structured physical fitness program helps in countering this effect of old age on metabolism.
Being physically fit also gives us more energy. Having a regular and well-structured physical activity helps increase the efficiency of the energy systems of our body. Having efficient bodily energy systems in turn heightens our stamina level and enables us to better perform in different daily tasks. A well-structured physical fitness program also enables us to work on our endurance, flexibility, and strength. It helps us to have stronger bones, improved muscular strength and endurance, and enhanced functionality of the joints.
Regularly performing physical exercises also helps offset anxiety and stress. Regular physical exercise helps calm our mind and relax our body that enables us to bring better focus and balance into our lives. It also makes us fall asleep faster and lets us enjoy a more soothing sleep compared with people who have sedentary lifestyles.
Perhaps the greatest benefit we can obtain from regular physical exercises is the prevention of illnesses. Regularly performing physical activities can help delay and even eliminate the onset of a lot of potentially incapacitating illnesses. It also helps us combat a number of diseases, including coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
In adopting a well-structured physical exercise program, you should bear in mind the different components that make up a balanced physical fitness program. Before anything else, remember to warm yourself up. Have 5-15 minutes of preparatory exercises to gradually increase your body temperature, muscle elasticity, heart rate, blood flow, respiratory rate, and viscosity of joint fluids. Then, move on to exercises that would help enhance your flexibility, cardio-vascular fitness, and muscle resistance. After which, always remember to do 5- to 15-minute cool down exercises to prevent venous blood pooling, and to reduce the risk of injury and level of adrenaline in your blood.
To live longer, healthier, and more productive lives, it helps to have an active lifestyle. Keep yourself physical fit and enjoy the numerous benefits of physical fitness.
